Sky Italia has dropped a first teaser for “Dostoevskij”, the TV series by twin directors Damiano and Fabio D’Innocenzo, which will launch from the upcoming Berlin Film Festival in the Berlinale Special section.

The eclectic, six-episode detective drama set in the stark Roman hinterland stars Filippo Timi as Enzo Vitello, a detective whose mind is warped by a troubled past. He winds up on the blood trail of a ruthless serial killer, nicknamed Dostoevskij because of the letters full of gruesome details that he leaves at crime scenes.

Haunted by the killer’s words, the policeman embarks on a dangerous solo investigation, getting closer and closer to a disturbing existential truth.

The Italian duo’s stylishly gritty dramas “Boy’s Cry” and “Bad Tales” both previously launched from the Berlinale, while their most recent film, “America Latina,” bowed at Venice in 2022. “Dostoevskij” is their debut in the TV series sphere.

After launching from Berlin, the series will release in Italian movie theaters in two separate parts via distributor Vision Distribution prior to playing on Sky.

The Sky Original series conceived, written and directed by the D’Innocenzo Brothers is produced by the Comcast-owned pay-TV player’s Sky Studios with Rome’s Paco Cinematografica.

“Dostoevskij” will air on Sky and stream on its NOW service in all Sky markets, including the U.K., Ireland, Italy, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

NBCUniversal Global Distribution will be handling international sales on behalf of Sky Studios.

Oscar-winning director Gabriele Salvatores (“Mediterraneo”) is back behind the camera on “Napoli – New York,” a period immigration drama based on a story written for the screen by Federico Fellini.

Fellini co-wrote the tale of two Neapolitan kids who embark on a ship to New York to escape Italy’s early postwar poverty with his frequent collaborator Tullio Pinelli, a writer on the Italian maestro’s “La Dolce Vita” and “8 1/2,” as well as other titles.

Italian A-lister Pierfrancesco Favino (“The Traitor,” “Nostalgia”) stars as the chief officer of the ship which the two kids, named Carmine and Celestina, manage to board surreptitiously in the port of Naples, becoming clandestine passengers. The youngsters are on a mission to reach the U.S. where they dream of living with Celestina’s sister, who emigrated to New York two years earlier. Newcomers Dea Lanzaro e Antonio Guerra play the kids.

The rest of the “Napoli – New York” cast comprises Neapolitan actors Anna Ammirati and Anna Lucia Pierro, alongside Omar Benson Miller, Tomas Arana and Antonio Catania in smaller roles.

The “Napoli – New York” treatment was written by Fellini and Pinelli in the mid-1940s when Fellini was a struggling writer-director in Rome, before he directed his first film “The White Sheik” in 1952. The treatment’s manuscript surfaced in Pinelli’s archives in 2006 and was subsequently published in Italy. Adaptation rights were then purchased by producers Isabella Cocuzza and Arturo Paglia whose Paco Cinematografica is producing the film with backing from RAI Cinema and support from the Friuli Venezia Giulia Film Commission.

After the critical and commercial success of his first film, My Brother Chases Dinosaurs, director Stefano Cipani returns behind the camera with Gym Class, starring Angela Finocchiaro, Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Raffaella Rea, Sergio Rubini and Claudio Santamaria.

The film – based on the theatre play The Gym by Giorgio Scianna – is written by Fabio and Damiano D’Innocenzo. The technical crew includes Fabio Cianchetti as director of photography, Ivana Gargiulo as set designer, Catia Dottori as costume designer and Jacopo Quadri as editor.

The film is an Italian-Polish co-production. A Paco Cinematografica and Rai Cinema production in co-production with Agresywna Banda and in collaboration with Cinecittà SpA. The film will be shot entirely in the Studio 8 in Cinecittà.

“Stefano Cipani is a talented and original author”, producers Isabella Cocuzza and Arturo Pagliaof Paco Cinematografica have stated. “We are proud to support and accompany him, once again, in the expression of his creativity in this new and ambitious project”.

Statement by Nicola Maccanico, CEO of Cinecittà SpA

People are finally returning to the cinemas, but even in the previous months Cinecittà never stopped producing and welcoming new stories by great authors, international projects, independent films, as well as TV series and shows. Our goal, in the coming months, will be to continue to do so in a broader way and to an even greater extent. We are particularly pleased to offer our studios a young talent like Stefano Cipani and to a production company like Paco led by experienced professionals such as Arturo Paglia and Isabella Cocuzza, for a film that includes a cast of performers much loved by the public. It’s nice to welcome a project that brings together different stories and energies, and combines talent, dramaturgical research, experience and art. We want to become the creative home of these projects with the ambition to play a central role in the Italian film industry in order to bring to viewers an even richer season of visions, stories and entertainment.

SYNOPSIS

The parents of three students are summoned by the principal of a small-town middle school: a crime has been committed, and their kids are responsible. But the parents struggle to accept the truth. The school’s gym is thus transformed into a makeshift courtroom, where a ferocious trial begins in a stubborn attempt to deny and cover up the truth.
